At Meta’s recent keynote, CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the company’s "Orion" AR prototype, a pair of ultra-lightweight augmented reality glasses that could revolutionise the way professionals handle their day-to-day tasks.
These glasses weigh just 100 grams and boast a 70-degree field of view, significantly wider than existing AR devices like Microsoft’s Hololens 2. Meta’s Orion prototype promises not only to enhance digital experiences but also to introduce groundbreaking solutions for industries like Estate Agency, where visual representation and client engagement are paramount.
Beyond Bulky Headsets: A Seamless Experience
For UK estate agents, one of the most exciting aspects of Meta’s AR glasses is the sleek and lightweight design. Until now, AR and virtual reality (VR) headsets have been bulky and impractical for everyday use, limiting their potential in fields like property. Meta’s Orion glasses represent a turning point by integrating smart technology into a wearable form factor that feels as natural as a pair of traditional glasses.
Unlike the heavy VR headsets typically used for virtual property tours, Meta’s AR glasses allow for seamless, see-through displays. This means estate agents could overlay digital information directly onto real-world scenes, making it easy to showcase property details, nearby amenities, or even visualise potential renovations all while standing in the actual space. For instance, a client viewing a property could instantly see digital floor plans or renovation options projected over the real home, providing a more immersive experience without the need for bulky devices.
Practical Applications for UK Estate Agents
Meta’s new AR prototype could radically transform how estate agents show properties and engage with potential buyers. Here are a few potential applications:
- Virtual Staging: Instead of physically staging a home, AR glasses could allow potential buyers to visualise different furniture layouts or design styles as they walk through a property. This could save both time and money, offering clients personalised experiences based on their tastes.
- Real-Time Information: On an open house event, agents could make one clear wall of a home show property details, price comparisons, or even neighbourhood statistics in real time. The glasses’ ability to layer this information onto real-world environments would allow agents to provide clients with comprehensive information without ever needing to try and speak to everyone.
- Remote Viewing: With AR glasses, clients unable to attend viewings could still participate virtually. Agents could project life-sized, 3D holograms of clients into the room or allow buyers to interact with the property remotely. This opens new opportunities for international buyers or clients relocating from distant locations.
- Client Interactions: Using voice commands, hand- and eye-tracking, or even a futuristic neural interface wristband (also teased by Meta), estate agents could effortlessly control digital interactions with potential clients. This could simplify the process of showcasing multiple properties or presenting detailed information, all while keeping hands free and attention focused on the client.
Challenges and Opportunities
While the potential applications of Meta’s AR glasses for UK estate agents are exciting, it’s important to recognise that the technology is still in its early stages. Meta has been developing AR technology since 2019, and while the Orion prototype looks promising, the current cost of production is estimated at £10,000 per unit. Obviously, this is far from feasible for most professionals today.
However, Zuckerberg has indicated that Meta is working on scaling up manufacturing to bring down costs. According to the company’s roadmap, a consumer-ready version of these AR glasses could hit the market by 2027. By then, this technology might be accessible to a wide range of industries, including Estate Agency.
